Tauranga Boys’ College is a state funded and approved high school near the central city. The College has a long association with students from all over the world and regularly facilitates international sports and cultural exchanges. Located in the beautiful Western Bay of Plenty, Tauranga is a short journey from Auckland & the tourist attractions of Rotorua & Lake Taupo. Nearby Mt.Maunganui boasts one of the best beaches in New Zealand for surfing or fishing.

Facilities

International students enjoy their own kitchen and computer/study room. Many opportunities arise for day trips to surrounding areas and students are encouraged to join extracurricular activities such as drama and music. A well-established Language Department caters for the English language support for all International Students. Class sizes are small and individual tutorials are available for all students.

Accommodation

All students are placed with friendly local families. Accommodation standards are regularly monitored by the Homestay Co-coordinator. All Homestays are within walking distance to the school or a direct bus route.

Courses (High School 13-18)

Students are able to choose from over 70 courses at 5 different levels. Traditional subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Art and English are especially strong. More practical subjects such as Engineering, Welding, Web Design and Video Production are also offered.

It is also possible to study at university level in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry through Waikato University at the school. The school has an excellent record and reputation in national examinations and is a leader in academic achievement.

English Language Support

A well-established English Language Department caters for the English language support for all international students. Class sizes are relatively small and individual tutorials are available for all students. Additionally, preparation for IELTS, SAT and specialist literacy courses specifically designed for entry into university are also offered.

Outdoor Education - Member of Outdoor Education New Zealand (ODENZ)

Outdoor education is an integral part of the senior curriculum and provides students with an exciting range of opportunities and activities. Established in 2000, the outdoor education programme is essentially the study of adventure pursuits, development of inter-personal skills and personal qualities that builds confidence and skills.

Students take advantage of Tauranga’s unique location which is surrounded by mountains, native bush, beaches, and rivers to pursue activities such as sea and river kayaking, scuba diving, rock climbing and skiing. Students can gain internationally recognised qualifications through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and a variety of professional organisations. The course is divided into 3 years and levels but depending on age and experience students can enter at any level.

This course has a large practical component and students should have a reasonable level of fitness. Students also have the opportunity to partake in the many outdoor and sporting opportunities that exist in the region including one of the best surf beaches in New Zealand, fishing, white- water rafting and caving.
