Whakatane High School is a co-educational school located in the beautiful Eastern Bay of Plenty, 90km from Tauranga. The school is not far from the Whakatane river, Ohope beach with a safe swimming and a surfing beach, a calm water harbour at Ohiwa, forests and lakes.
The school is committed to meeting students individual learning goals and therefore offers a wide range of academic and vocational subjects and career pathways. Marine Studies is a strong focus of the school and students have the opportunity to learn to scuba dive and explore the nearby marine reserve. A highlight for Marine Studies students is the annual trip to the University of Queensland's research facility on Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
